What a busy couple of days we have had in Nursery!
We have been very lucky to have some very special visitors yesterday and today.

Yesterday we went through to the hall to see an African Drum group called 'Kakatsitsi'
We joined in to the rhythm and the beat. Lots of us had fun playing our own drums on our knees too!

We listened and joined in with the singing.
The band sang and we sang back.
We had a little workout too!
We got to our feet and we all joined in with the dancing too.
We enjoyed following the movements and actions.

Oh Help! Oh No! It's the...............

....GRUFFALO!
We had another very special visitor today!
It was very exciting!
Today, the Gruffalo visited the nursery!
He had terrible tusks and terrible claws and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws......
Lots of us gave the Gruffalo a big hug.
We discovered he was really friendly and really very cuddly!

The Gruffalo gave us big waves.
We think he liked our nursery too.
Some of us even rubbed his belly and we are sure we could fell the owl ice-cream and scrambled snake!

He's the Gruffalo, Gruffalo,Gruffalo, he's the Gruffalo.

He has knobbly knees and turned out toes and a poisonous wart at the end of his nose!
Some of us even touched his purple prickles that were all over his back.

Patsy from the library visited with the Gruffalo today too.
We all listened as Patsy read us the Julia Donaldson book all about our very special visitor.
The book Patsy read was called 'The Gruffalo'

Time for some more Gruffalo hugs!

We have been busy listening to this story in nursery this week too.
We have also been learning the Gruffalo song.
As the Gruffalo left we all sang to him.
We were all very excited to meet the Gruffalo today.
We are busy planning some more Gruffalo activities for next week.
Tomorrow we are even planning to have Gruffalo Crumble for our snack!
Wish us luck!

Sunday, 7 September 2014

We have been introducing our new boys and girls to some different areas of the nursery this week.

We have been busy exploring our nursery raised garden bed.

When we went out to look, we found lots and lots of weeds had grown over the summer holidays.
We had a lot of work to do!

We discovered some very spiky weeds called Thistles! We needed gloves on to pull these out. We have made a huge difference but we still have some more work to do!

We have also been listening to some funny books this week. We listened to a book called 'Pants' , another book called 'More Pants' and a book called 'Socks'

We decorated our own big and small pants using ink and stampers to make patterns.
Look up on our washing lines as you come in to nursery and you will see lots of pairs of pants!

We used paint and collage materials at the craft table to help us decorate some socks too.
We think the sock monster has visited the nursery as we can't find any pairs that match!

We enjoyed watching a story called ' We're going on a bear hunt' this week too.
We went on our own mini bear hunt and explored the different areas around the school.

We hope we have managed to return all the bears safely back to the nursery!

A huge welcome to all of our new boys and girls who came to nursery for the first time last week!

A big welcome back to all the boys and girls who came back to see us again too.
What a busy first week back we had!
We thought you might like to see some of the many things we got up to during the week.

Many of us had great fun exploring the house corner.
We were busy making cups of tea and soup.
We also went in our car to the shops as we needed more shopping!

We enjoyed exploring the water tray too.
Lots of us investigated pouring and filling. Many of us enjoyed playing with the boats too.

We had lovely new sand in the sand tray.
Lots of us loved the feeling of the soft sand on our fingers.
We investigated and explored the different containers.
We were busy filling and emptying the containers and we were all keen to pour too.

We enjoyed trying different foods during our snack time.
We were busy learning about our new snack routines too.
We follow the arrows to help us wash our hands, collect our plate and cup and then to pour our milk or water.
When we have finished our snack we were remembering to put our plate and cup away to be washed.

We were busy exploring the outdoor area at nursery.
Many of us had fun keeping fit on the trikes and the scooters.

The Playdough table was very popular so we have more out this week too.
We had lots of budding 'Great British Bake Off' competitors who were busy making lots of cakes.

We enjoyed exploring the musical instruments and many of us were keen to play with the new nursery bells. We discovered to make them work, we need to hit a button on the top.

More outdoor fun while the sun is still shining!

Some of the boys and girls stayed in nursery for their first whole day.
They were busy learning about their new lunchtime routines.
Here some of the children are enjoying their first ever school dinner, yum yum.

Last Day of Term: Teddy Bear's Picnic at the Earl's Palace in Birsay and a wee play on the beach.

First we had some parachute games before we headed down to the beach before the tide came in!

We had fun on the sand and the sun shone for us!
 We made sandcastles
We found treasures and collected materials from the beach
 We paddled in the sea
 We buried things, including ourselves!!
We made a big art picture of a Mermaid, just like Mr Maker
We all had super fun, building, climbing, playing, splashing, creating and laughing!

Next we went back to the Earl's Palace for our picnic and to find our teddy bears.

Teddy Bears picnic
Next we read 'We're going on a bear hunt' and everyone joined in with the actions

To end our day we all had a bear hunt for our own teddy bears in the Palace.
I think everyone had a super day and there will be lots of sleepy bairns in Stromness tonight!

Have a super holiday to everyone and we look forward to seeing everyone in August
Over and Out!!

We've been busy outside in the sunshine doing some 'Messy Art'. Here we are painting footprints with welly boots, making big pictures and using different materials.

Sunday, 8 June 2014

It's been a very busy few weeks in nursery and we thought you might like to see some of the many things that we have been up to!

We have been very interested in Castles.

Here many of us are helping to make the castle for us to play in.

We helped to raise money for the international water aid charity 'Just a Drop'
To help raise money lots of us came to nursery dressed in blue.
Many of us had our face painted too!
Many of us also took part in the 'Just a Drop' competition.
We drew pictures inside the water drop.
We thought about water and drew pictures about what water meant to us.

As part of the Folk Festival we went to see the group called 'Family Atlantica'
We listened as they showed us musical styles from Africa and Latin America.
We had great fun joining in and dancing to the beat!

Here are many of us receiving our certificates from Mr McIntosh for taking part in our Welly Waddle.

A huge well done to all of the boys and girls who took part.
The sponsor money keeps coming in and a huge thank you to everyone who sponsored us too.
We hope to let you all know the final total very soon!
