Friday 4 December 2015

This week we were busy planning our next steps to develop our Outdoor Area!
The children were asked what they like to do outside.

They could all share some super ideas.
Many of the children like to balance, run, play with water, build and even be super heroes outside!

Once the children had shared their ideas of what they like to do, we were ready for the next even more exciting part!

Catherine Diamond visited us with some very excited suitcases.
When we opened them they were full of little loose parts!
They had little pieces of nets, little bits of trees, kitchen foil, sand, twigs and much more...
In small groups, the children were given a small tray.
Inside they used the small parts to create their ideal outdoor area!
They had excellent ideas and created some really super outdoor environments.
A campfire and a Water Pump were talked about often!

We are busy making a floor book.Once our floor book of the children's ideas is completed we will be ready for the next stage, designing and developing our area!

Exciting stuff!
Here's some more pictures from last week.

As we continued to follow the children's interest in the weather and seasons we tried out a new style of painting!

We painted with 'Paintstickles'!
They were really easy to make.
We popped the paint in some ice cube trays, popped in half a lollipop stick and put them in the freezer.
We were excited to see what had happened.
As we painted the 'Paintstickles' melted!
We had great fun and they created lots and lots of discussion.
The children are keen to paint with these another day.
More loose parts fun outside!
Lots of opportunities to design and be curious!
We decided to create ramps to run and walk down.
Then we wanted to put tryes at the bottom so we could jump too!

Just what we all need for the weather in Orkney!
Here we are dressed for all types of weather on the same day!

As well as investigating the cold weather and Ice, we spoke about hot, tropical places too.
We explored the playdough with tropical umbrellas, deck chairs and people.

Leaf Fun!

We had great outdoor learning fun with lots and lots of leaves!
We investigated the different colours and leaf shapes.
We drew around ourselves and made leaf people too!
But best of all.....We enjoyed throwing the leaves high in the air!
We enjoyed throwing them up and running fast through them!
This lead to lots of discussion about the different seasons, climates and weather.

This week, we explored Ice in the water tray.
We explored the different cold water animals that live in the ice.
On our tough spot we made a tropical island!
We explored the grass with our magnifying glasses.
Then many of us enjoyed playing with the tropical, hot animals.
We added water to the sand and we liked to splash the pebbles in the water.
We helped to make some changes to our house corner!
We added lots of different clothes.
We added some clothes that we need in Winter and some clothes that we might wear on a warmer day in the Summer.
We have really enjoyed trying on a variety of outfits this week.
What super play we have had in the house area this week!

Lots of the children help to paint him yellow.
Then they decided he needed some collage materials added too.
Time to raise some money for Children in Need.

We had great fun making our own firework bottles today.
We poured and measured the water in to the bottles through a funnel.
Then many of us decided to add food colouring. We dropped it in using a pipette.
This made us work lots of little muscles in our fingers!
Many of us wanted to add in glitter too.
Then it was time to pop on the lids and shake our fireworks!
We had great fun painting in the art room this week!
We enjoyed painting on the tables, using scrappers to make patterns and even painted ourselves!

Welcome back to Term Two.
What a busy first week back we all had!

We enjoyed making our chocolate dipped apples in our small groups on Friday.
First we dipped the apples in the chocolate. Next we dipped the apple in to the sprinkles.
They looked delicious.
When they were ready to eat, we all took them home for a special treat after or lunch or tea!
We had some very unusual looking children in the nursery on Friday!
Look very carefully and you might recognise some of them!
Well Done to all of the children who dressed up.
We hope they are all back to normal by Monday!
Many of us had lots of fun decorating the pumpkins with Play Doh!
Many of us enjoyed this so much that on Friday we painted our pumpkins and some of the children wanted to stick and glue paper and materials on too.
We had some very fancy looking pumpkins in the nursery.
We were busy making magic potions too!
The children drew their magic ingredients, saying the magic work as they dropped them into the cauldron.
I wonder if some of our magic potions worked?

Painting with Broomsticks!
Very messy but oh what fun we had!
We used the broomsticks to paint on paper and pumpkins.

Our last week in Term One!
Where has the time gone?
We hope you all have a super October holiday!
We look forward to seeing you all back in the nursery again very soon.

We were very busy using our senses in the tough spot this week!
There were lots of different ingredients to smell using our noses!
Many of us tried using a pestle and mortar for the first time too.
We uses our eyes and the magnifying glasses to investigate the different herbs and spices.

Our term ended with a very special surprise visitor!
We had lots of very excited children as we looked inside the box.
Peep, it was a frog!!
We released him back in to the pond.
We carried him back to his home in a cardboard box.
Then we waited and watched as he did a huge jump and a splash into the pond!

Here's a few pictures to let you see some of the things we have been busy doing.

This week lots of the boys and girls having been busy helping us to plan and design our outdoor area.
Some of the children have been busy cutting out and sticking down pictures of things they would really like to play with outside.
Some of you have been drawing and mark making your ideas.
While some of you have been busy telling us your wonderful ideas too.
We have popped your ideas up in the nursery so that everyone can see your many excellent ideas.

We decided we would like some more colour in our outdoor area!
This week lots of us have been busy painting different shapes and sizes of stones.
We are going to varnish them and get them in our Outdoor area soon.

There has been lots of interest in the builders outside this week.
They gave us lots of ideas for our building too.
They even gave us some hard hats to wear so we could play builder's too!
We have been using our imaginations outside this week.
Using the big bricks, lego bricks and lots of loose parts we have been enjoying building in the sun!
Inside, we had a little move of our construction area too.
We decided to add some material and pegs to our area.
Some of the children had a great idea, they started to build dens!
Peep! Who can we see hiding in the den?

Some of the children have been interested in the different seasons too.
They were keen to find out about leaves and why they were falling down.
We investigated the different colours and shapes of the leaves.
Lots of us were interested to see what lives in the leaves too.
We used magnifying glasses to look closely.
Through our magnifying glasses we found enormous slaters, worms and even a centipede!

Saturday 26 September 2015

On Friday the whole school celebrated Roald Dahl day. This years theme was 'The Twits'

To celebrate Roald Dahl day and his book the 'Twits' we were very busy looking at this story throughout the week.

We planned lots of exploratory and experimental experiences for the children during our small group time this week.

Mr Twit had lots of disgusting and rotten foods growing in his beard. Yuck!
He even had worms and spaghetti deep inside his beard.
We explored the texture and feeling of the spaghetti on our fingers.
We investigated the Mr Twit Beard Soup too!
We were intrigued to find out about the many different items lurking inside here too!
In our art area we were busy making Mr Twit beards.
Some of us practiced our mark making while some of us were busy cutting using the scissors and sticking with glue.
Look at all of these messy and dirty beards!
Look out for them when you come into the Nursery on Monday.
They are all on display for you to see.

Many of us dressed up on Friday.
The morning session popped along to see the P5 class and there fantastic assembly.
Keep looking back at our blog as we will be posting some more pictures of Roald Dahl week fun soon.

Monday 21 September 2015

Last week we visited the hall where he had great fun!
Here are some of the children very busy practicing and improving their balancing skills.
We love these photos showing the children exploring and problem solving as they find lots of wonderful places to balance and place the hoops!

We had great fun exploring more big outdoor art last week too!
As we were busy preparing the paper for our big art, some of the children started to ride over the paper with the bikes and scooters!
This gave us an excellent idea! Why not paint with the wheels?
The children were keen to explore welly painting too.
We explored the different footprints and patterns we could make when we ran and compared these with when we went slower and slower.
When we were finished if was time to wash our boots.
What better way to wash them than splashing in the cosy, soapy water!
